Getting your board to help raise funds in the best of times can often be difficult; during a financial crisis, the task can be absolutely daunting. There are ways to reduce the resistance, reduce the fears, and channel the indispensable energy of volunteer fundraisers. Our speaker Carl Richardson cites an example: “I once took a job working with a fundraising foundation in support of a local hospital. The board numbered 18. Shortly after taking the position, I met with each board member separately and, to a person, each member told me that he or she had no intention of raising money.” As one member put it, “I joined the board to help the hospital – not ask for money.” A year later, every board member had played a significant role in raising money.
